Verifying the content of a monitored web page

Summary

This tutorial will give step-by-step instructions of verifying the content of a monitored web page. The goal is to make the user comfortable with verifying content with WebWatchBot to test for the correct content being served and error detection.


Steps

  1. In WebWatchBot Manager, create a new Watch Item: File -> New -> Watch Item
  2. Change the type to "HTTP (Page Download)"
  3. Enter the URL, e.g. http://www.yahoo.com
  4. Click the "Settings" button to open the Watch Type specific settings dialog.

  5. Select the "Search" tab
  6. Enter search text that should be found on the web page (result: success)

  7. Click "OK" until the windows are closed to save the Watch Item
  8. Click on the Tools->"Run Now" to run the Watch Item
  9. The log file will show success. You can view the results in the Log pane. To view the entire log file, use the menu option View -> Log File.
  10. Change the Watch Item’s search text to text that should not be found on the page (result: failure)

  11. Click "OK" until the windows are closed to save the Watch Item
  12. Click on the Tools->"Run Now" to run the Watch Item
  13. The log file will show failure.
  14. Keep the search text. Change the Watch Item’s search option for "If Search text is found, then trigger failure" so that it is checked (result: success). This is useful to test for error conditions, such as searching for the word “error”.

  15. Click "OK" until the windows are closed to save the Watch Item
  16. Click on the Tools->"Run Now" to run the Watch Item
  17. The log file will show success
  18. Change the Watch Item’s search text to text that should be found on the page. Remember, the option for "If Search text is found, then trigger failure" should be checked (result: success
