Setup Email Alerts Tutorial

This tutorial will guide you through the steps to setting up an email alert.


  1. Configure WebWatchBot to use your mail server to send out email alerts, by selecting the menu option: Tools -> Email Settings:

  2. Enter the hostname of your SMTP mail server in the "Primary SMTP Mail Server" field. Mail server names are similar to or If you are unsure of the hostname of your mail server, contact your system administrator or ISP.

  3. Enter your email address in the "Primary From Email address" field. The email address you enter will typically be in the same "domain" as your mail server. For example, if your mail server is, the email address you enter here is typically "".

  4. If your mail server requires authentication (most SMTP mail servers do), you should check the box for "My Server Requires Authentication" and enter the username and password for authentication.

  5. When you have finished entering all of your information, click on the "Test" button to have WebWatchBot send a test email to the email address you entered in the "Primary From Email address" field. When the test is complete, you will receie a popup notification of its success or failure.

  6. If the test was a success, check for a new message in your email client (Outlook, Eudora, Netscape Mail, etc.) from WebWatchBot.

  7. If the test failed, check your settings. The most common problem is not specifying a username and password for mail server authentication. If you continue to experience problems, please contact ExclamationSoft Support:

  8. Now, configure your watch item to send an email alert during failure. Click on the OK button in the Preferences window.

  9. Open an existing watch item (you can modify the watch item "My First Watch" created in the Quick Start Tutorial), by selecting the watch item in the Watch List, then selecting the menu option: File -> Properties -> Watch Item.

  10. The Watch Item Properties window will open.
  11. Click on the "Alarm" tab.

  12. Click on the "Actions" button. The "Set Alarm Actions" window will open.

  13. Enter the same email address you previously entered into the space provided:
  14. Check the button to make the email alert active:
  15. Click the OK button to close the window.

  16. Click on the "General" tab of the Watch Item Properties window:

  17. Change the "Response Time Maximum in ms" to 1 (one), to cause the watch item to fail the next time it is run and to test the email alert functionality.

  18. Click the OK button to close the window.

  19. The watch item should now run, and fail. After it fails, an email alert should be sent to the email address you entered. Check for a new message in your email client (Outlook, Eudora, Netscape Mail, etc.) from WebWatchBot.
